RMI completes the construction and inauguration of four schools across the Androy region
The Responsible Mica Initiative (RMI) is proud to announce the inauguration of two additional community schools in Madagascar’s Androy region, located in the villages of Isonjo and Imanombo/Sakavalagna. These two schools will provide access to education for 300 children, including 104 preschoolers and 196 primary school students. The official ceremonies took place on the 25 and 26 of August 2026 and mark another important milestone in RMI’s efforts to improve access to quality education in mica-producing communities.
These newly inaugurated schools complete a first series of four schools constructed and equipped by RMI in southern Madagascar, following the openings of the schools in Befasy and Mafelefo earlier this year. Together, these investments aim to bring quality education closer to children living in vulnerable mining communities and contribute to stronger, more resilient local communities.
Investing in education to support long-term community development
Access to education remains a key pillar of RMI’s Community Empowerment Program. Schools play a critical role in creating opportunities for children, strengthening community wellbeing, and supporting efforts to address the root causes of child labor in mica-producing areas. The schools in Isonjo and Imanombo were constructed, equipped, and prepared for operation in close collaboration with local communities and authorities.
The inauguration ceremonies brought together representatives of regional and local authorities, education stakeholders, community leaders, teachers, parents, and students. The events included official speeches, ribbon-cutting ceremonies, school visits, and community celebrations highlighting the importance of education for future generations.
Building sustainable change through collaboration
The completion of these schools reflects RMI’s collaborative approach to community development, working alongside local partners, public authorities, civil society organizations, and member companies to support sustainable development in Madagascar’s mica-producing regions.
While the inauguration of these schools represents an important achievement, it is only one part of a broader effort to improve living conditions in mining communities through education, livelihoods, infrastructure, and child protection initiatives. Through continued partnership and engagement, RMI remains committed to helping create conditions where children can thrive and communities can build a more sustainable future.
