The Global Workplace Standard Mica Mines provides purpose–built guidance for Mica Mining Operations to foster safe, fair, and environmentally responsible mining practices.
Developed in 2025, the standard recognizes that mica mines vary significantly in their nature, size, level of mechanization, operating context, resources, and capacity. Rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach, it established a common set of expectations while allowing requirements and implementation pathways to be adapted to the realities of different mining operations. It aims to provide:
- A proportionate ESG Framework: environmental, social, and governance requirements designed to remain relevant across different types and scales of mica mining operations, balancing robust expectations with practical and achievable implementation.
- Risk-based due diligence Procedures: due diligence requirements aligned with OECD framework and adapted to the realities of different types of upstream mica operations, including appropriate provisions for mines that receive or source mica from external suppliers.
- A continuous improvement approach: clear and auditable requirements that enable operations to identify gaps, prioritize risks, strengthen their practices over time, and demonstrate measurable progress toward responsible mining.
The breadth of the standard draws on other widely recognized voluntary mining standards and guidance principles to support continuous improvement and responsible sourcing practices across the mica value chain.
