Bringing together stakeholders to shape the future of Madagascar’s mica sector
On June 30 and July 1, 2026, the Responsible Mica Initiative (RMI) convened Madagascar’s National Mica Platform in Antananarivo. Organized with the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the event brought together representatives from mining communities, exporters, public authorities, technical and financial partners, civil society, and international supply chain actors.
Designed as a space for dialogue, the platform aimed to foster a shared understanding of the challenges facing the mica sector while identifying practical pathways toward more responsible, transparent, and sustainable supply chains. The goal is to allow stakeholders to exchange perspectives, share field realities, and collectively explore solutions.
Giving a voice to mining communities
The first day of the platform focused on the realities experienced by mining communities, building on consultations conducted in advance with the different stakeholder groups.
Community representatives shared their perspectives on the issues that directly affect their daily lives, including:
- Occupational health and safety
- Mica prices and miners’ incomes
- Child labor and access to education
- The role of women across the mica value chain
These discussions created an opportunity for dialogue between communities, exporters, government representatives, development partners, and international buyers, fostering mutual understanding of the challenges faced at every level of the supply chain.
Advancing responsible practices across the supply chain
The second day focused on the operational and technical dimensions of the sector.
Participants explored topics including:
- The implementation of responsible sourcing practices and international requirements
- Traceability and progressive supply chain formalization
- Operational challenges faced by exporters and other supply chain actors
- Opportunities for strengthening the long-term development of Madagascar’s mica sector
Through dynamic discussions, participants identified recommendations and potential areas for collective action that can contribute to continuous improvement across the industry.
A long-term commitment to dialogue and collaboration
The National Mica Platform marks an important step toward building a structured national dialogue among stakeholders in Madagascar’s mica sector.
The recommendations emerging from the two-day event will now be analyzed to help inform the next phases of work led by the Responsible Mica Initiative and its partners. They will contribute to shaping future actions on governance, responsible sourcing, formalization, traceability, and community development.
As a neutral facilitator, RMI remains committed to supporting inclusive dialogue and encouraging collaboration between all actors involved in the mica value chain. By bringing together diverse perspectives and fostering shared ownership of solutions, the initiative aims to strengthen responsible sourcing while contributing to lasting improvements for mining communities in Madagascar.
