Launch of the Mica Craft Code: A Step Forward for Responsible Mica Sourcing

The Responsible Mica Initiative (RMI), in collaboration with the Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM), is proud to announce the launch of the Mica CRAFT Code, a groundbreaking framework designed to address the challenges of artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) in the mica sector. This innovative tool is now available as an open-source resource, empowering mica producers to meet global due diligence standards and integrate into formal supply chains.

What is the Mica CRAFT Code?

The Mica CRAFT Code is a branched version of the globally recognized CRAFT Code (version 2.1). It is tailored specifically for ASM mica producers, acknowledging their unique challenges and providing progressive entry criteria that support their journey toward responsible sourcing.

This voluntary sustainability standard is designed to:

  • Promote better working conditions and livelihoods for mica miners.
  • Foster environmental and social improvements in mica production.
  • Enable ASM mica producers to align with the OECD Minerals Guidance and gain access to formal markets.

Why a Mica-Specific Code?

Mica mining is distinct from other minerals due to its informal and seasonal nature. The geographic isolation of mining communities and their low level of development result in a high prevalence of child labor. Artisanal mica mining is also characterized by unsafe working conditions and a lack of safety equipment. Prolonged exposure to mica dust can cause respiratory diseases, while a lack of medical care further exacerbates health risks. These characteristics make it challenging for ASM mica producers to meet the requirements of the core CRAFT Code.

The Mica CRAFT Code bridges this gap by introducing:

  • Progressive conformance criteria: Allowing ASM producers to gradually meet international standards.
  • Support for miners in vulnerable regions: Beginning with proactive implementation in Madagascar.
  • Global applicability: Providing a framework that can be adapted to various countries and contexts.

How Was the Mica CRAFT Code Developed?

The Mica CRAFT Code was developed through an inclusive process:

  • Technical expertise from the Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM).
  • Oversight by a Steering Committee with representatives from across the mica supply chain, including local stakeholders, NGOs, and international organizations.
  • A public consultation period to gather insights and feedback from a diverse range of stakeholders.

These documents are published under a Creative Commons license, ensuring free and open access for all stakeholders to encourage widespread adoption.

Looking Ahead

The launch of the Mica CRAFT Code is only the beginning. Throughout 2025, the Responsible Mica Initiative will focus on developing the Mica CRAFT Scheme, which will provide additional tools and resources to support ASM producers in implementing the Code effectively.
