RMI launches new Global Workplace Standard for Small to Medium Mica Mines
The Responsible Mica Initiative (RMI) is taking a major step forward in advancing responsible sourcing with the launch of its Global Workplace Responsible Sourcing, Environmental, Health & Safety Due Diligence Standard (GWS) for Small to Medium Semi-Mechanised Mica Mines — the first international framework purpose-built for this segment of the mica sector.
For too long, small and medium semi-mechanised mines have sat between existing standards — too structured for artisanal frameworks yet not suited to large-scale industrial models. This new standard bridges that gap. It sets out practical, proportionate and auditable requirements that reflect operational realities on the ground, while remaining aligned with global expectations.
Built around five core pillars — environmental stewardship, occupational health & safety, social performance, governance, and due diligence — the standard provides a structured yet achievable roadmap for continuous improvement.
Indeed, even at the very start of the supply chain, due diligence remains essential: mines may engage external suppliers and, more importantly, are the point where environmental, social and governance risks first arise — making early identification and management both logical and impactful.
With global applicability as a target, like the Global Workplace Standard (GWS) for Mica Processers, the GWS for small and medium semi-mechanised mines helps align responsible mining practices and expectations across mica-producing regions.
To ensure it delivers real impact, RMI is currently piloting accompanying tools and audit methodologies during Q1 and Q2 in Rajasthan, India. Insights from these field tests will directly inform refinements to the tools and audit methodology, ensuring they are robust, workable, and tailored to the realities of formalized mica mining operations.
The launch of this standard also signals an important evolution for RMI. It lays the groundwork for opening RMI membership to small mines in India — creating a structured pathway for upstream actors to engage formally with RMI and demonstrate their commitment to responsible practices.
With this milestone, RMI adds another building block to its mission of shaping a mica supply chain that is fair, safe and sustainable — from mine to market!
