APPROACH / OUR 3 PILLAR APPROACH
Through the implementation of global workplace standards, the Responsible Mica Initiative promotes responsible practices across all upstream value chains, including the payment of legal minimum wages. Though, the Responsible Mica Initiative is also working hard beyond legal minimum wages, towards payment of at least living incomes and wages, with the conviction that, if adults earn sufficient revenues to sustain their entire family, they won’t take their children to the mica mines.
RMI promotes responsible sourcing and accountability throughout the mica value chain. A prerequisite to support implementation of workplace standards and verification systems at mica processing site and mine level lies in traceability and transparency. Officially launched in 2021, RMI traceability platform serves as a pivotal tool in RMI's ongoing mission to bring transparency to the mica industry's complex supply chains.

Officially launched in 2021, RMI traceability platform serves as a pivotal tool in RMI's ongoing mission to bring transparency to the mica industry's complex supply chains. Designed for RMI members, the platform enables careful mapping of supply chains which fosters a comprehensive understanding of sourcing origins and added value along mica supply chains. In addition, the platform enables upstream players to track their progress in implementing responsible workplace practices, giving them the opportunity to highlight this progress and enter formal international supply chains. This enables downstream players to focus their support on the mines and processing sites that need support the most, through a cycle of assessments, capacity building training for workers and management facilitated by RMI team, third-party audits conducted by RMI accredited auditors, co-definition of corrective action plans, before a new cycle of visits and handholding support starts with RMI team.
Under this pillar RMI focus its efforts on strengthening governance structures and legal frameworks at national and regional levels, ensuring mica mining activities are formally recognized, regulated, and monitored.
This translates into development of policy papers, briefings, research as well as organization of numerous meetings and workshop with both the governments of purchasing countries, starting with Europe, as well as the governments of mica extracting countries, whether at the national, regional, or local level. Awareness of the issues surrounding mica sourcing and all the workers involved is essential and a necessary step toward recognizing those workers, asserting their rights, and enforcing them. A robust legal environment also help enforce child protection laws and enables sustainable, responsible mica sourcing.

Through strong partnerships with local NGOs, government administrations, local community-based institutions, local elected representatives, as well as via recruitment of expert persons, RMI works at the village level to empower marginalized mica-dependent communities and children.
Through strong partnerships with local NGOs, government administrations, local community-based institutions, local elected representatives, as well as via recruitment of expert persons, RMI works at the village level to empower marginalized mica-dependent communities and children. Programs focus on eliminating child labor and ensuring decent working conditions for mica pickers, through a holistic combination of different activities, structured around 4 core pillars : Enhancing Livelihoods, Improving Health and Nutrition, Supporting Access to Quality Education, and Strengthening Social Security Coverage. Each one of these pillars have themselves sub-components and a number of activities, adjusted based on communities' specific needs and context. Enhancing Livelihoods particularly, includes sub-facets like earning sufficient revenues from mica picking (living wages and incomes being a core topic of RMI's work), developing additional sources of livelihood (like agriculture, small businesses, livestock farming…), and reducing unwanted expenses, starting with health-related expenses.

Though, the Responsible Mica Initiative is also working hard beyond legal minimum wages, towards payment of living incomes and wages, with the conviction that, if adults earn sufficient revenues to sustain their entire family, they won’t take their children to the mica mines. This exercise requires addressing several technical barriers, beginning with the formalization of mica mining, greater transparency, and the introduction of formal payment mechanisms – all of which can be supported by the other pillars of the RMI
RMI’s success is built on collaboration between industry members, NGOs, community leaders, and governments, all being responsibility bearers and part of the solution. Together, these partners address every dimension of the mica sector challenge — from improving working conditions to securing a living wage or income for families and ensuring that no child is left behind.
Through this united, holistic approach, the Responsible Mica Initiative is building a future where mica is sourced responsibly, communities are empowered, and children’s rights are fully protected.
