first meeting of mica exporters in Madagascar

Strategic meetings for dialogue and alignment

The Responsible Mica Initiative (RMI) recently held its first yearly meeting with mica exporters in Madagascar, in order to strengthen collaboration and advancing responsible sourcing practices in the country.

These meetings serve as a regular exchange platform between RMI and exporters, designed to support members in progressing toward compliance across their supply chains. Held on a monthly basis, the sessions provide space to discuss audits, RMI activities, operational challenges, and upcoming priorities, while also enabling consultation and strategic decision-making.

Participation and engagement

This first meeting brought together all mica exporters who are members of RMI, demonstrating strong commitment and engagement from the sector.

Participants included 21 exporters and compliance managers, ensuring both operational and strategic perspectives were represented.

Key priorities and shared roadmap

2026 agenda and support for supply chain compliance

A central focus of the meeting was the 2026 agenda, with RMI outlining planned support to accompany exporters toward compliance at mining and sorting sites. This includes:

  • Training based on the Global Workplace Standards (GWS) criteria and the Mica CRAFT Code
  • Advisory sessions, site visits, and the development of corrective action plans to support compliance efforts
  • Facilitation of formalized commercial relationships to strengthen traceability across the supply chain

In addition, discussions covered the collection of productivity data from sorters at sorting sites, which will inform the definition of a progressive strategy toward achieving a living wage in the mica sector.

Community Empowerment Programs (CEP) and livelihoods

The meeting also addressed ongoing and planned Community Empowerment Program (CEP) and livelihoods activities aimed at improving living conditions and economic resilience in mica-producing communities. These include:

  • Construction of schools and water boreholes
  • Literacy activities
  • Economic resilience initiatives designed to contribute to the achievement of a living income for mining communities

These efforts reflect RMI’s integrated approach, linking responsible supply chains with tangible social impact on the ground.

This dialogue supports stronger alignment between upstream producers and downstream markets, reinforcing shared responsibility across the mica value chain.

Building the foundations for responsible mica in Madagascar

This first meeting of mica exporters in Madagascar helps in building a structured, transparent, and responsible mica sector. By fostering regular dialogue, providing technical support, and aligning on shared goals, RMI and its members are strengthening compliance, improving traceability, and advancing community empowerment.

Through collective engagement and long-term commitment, these exchanges strengthen the collaboration for sustainable livelihoods, responsible sourcing, and meaningful impact across Madagascar’s mica supply chain.
